Men and Women Agree on Australia's Gender Inequality

Ttwo-thirds of Australian women and almost half of the country's men believe the country is yet to achieve full gender equality, according to a new poll.

A survey conducted by the IPSOS Mackay, covering 1047 people, found 19 percent of women strongly agreed, and 43 percent somewhat agreed with the proposition that "generally, men and women are not treated equally in Australia".

Gender Equality the Worst in Asia-Pacific Region
The vibrant economic transformation in recent decades in Asia and the Pacific regions, though a case of pride, has not translated into progress on gender equality.

Ten percent of men strongly supported the proposition, while 37 percent agreed "somewhat" with the question, The Age reports.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Governor-General Quentin Bryce rated relatively highly when respondents were asked which Australian women "best represent Australian values".

Fourteen percent of Australians believed Bligh best embodied national values, slightly trailing swimming champion Dawn Fraser with 15 per cent.

UN Says Gender Equality on Farms Could Cut World Hunger
Gender equality has been advocated by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in agriculture in order to increase farm production and reduce the world's hungry by at least 100 million.

Bryce ran third with 9.7 percent votes, while seven per cent of people said solo teenage sailor Jessica Watson best represented the nation's values. Prime Minister Julia Gillard was at fifth place with 7.6 per cent votes.
