Mel Gibson has admitted that he suffers from bipolar disorder in a new documentary.

The documentary is about the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) acting class of 1977.

The Hollywood star, who was interviewed in 2002 by his classmate Sally McKenzie, talks about his memories as a student in a stellar year that included Judy Davis, Steve Bisley, Robert Menzies, Annie Byron, Debra Lawrance, Linda Newton and the theatre director Peter Kingston.

I had really good highs but some very low lows," Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

"I found out recently I'm manic depressive," he added.

The actor was arrested on July 28, 2006 for DUI while speeding in his vehicle with an open container of alcohol, and was also accused of making the derogatory remarks about Jews to the sheriff's deputy who arrested him.

However, Gibson has repeatedly apologized for making the derogatory comments.
