Britain's former prime minister Margaret Thatcher had successful surgery to insert a pin into her arm Friday, her son said, after she broke it in a fall last week.
The 83-year-old is expected to remain in hospital until at least Wednesday, Mark Thatcher said outside the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.

Her son said he was "relieved" and "delighted" that the general anaesthetic operation went well. He said described the operation as "a complete success".

Thatcher, dubbed "the Iron Lady" for her uncompromising leadership style, is Britain's only female prime minister. She headed a Conservative government between 1979 and 1990 and overhauled the British economy during the 1980s.
Thatcher has suffered a series of strokes in recent years and now suffers from dementia. She generally avoids public speaking on doctors' advice.
She spent a night in hospital in March last year after feeling unwell during dinner with friends.
But she has been spotted out and about recently -- last week, she celebrated the 30th anniversary of her first election victory at a London club.
