Man With Motor Neurone Disease Records His Voice for Son

A man diagnosed with motor neurone disease has decided to record his voice so that his son can hear it even if he loses the ability to speak.

Laurence Brewer of Bolton was diagnosed with MND in 2008. The latter is a condition that causes irreversible damage to the nervous system. The 43-year-old Brewer already has limited mobility and is convinced that his voice will be the next to go.

Stuttering, stammering or disfluency is a speech disorder that can hamper communication and affect a person’s quality of life. Its impact can be treated effectively by stuttering therapy.

"At the moment, if my voice goes in the next six months he might not recognize me," said Mr Brewer, referring to his 13-month son Stan. "But, in five years time, if I have the voice banked he can hear what I sounded like or an idea of what I sounded like. So it's a memory."

Mr Brewer is recording his speech patterns in a speech synthesis program called ModelTalker, which he discovered online. He is happy that even if his voice gives way, his son will still hear him speak in future.
