Man Troubled With the Noise of His Own Eyeballs

A 57 year old British man approached doctors with rather rare and puzzling symptoms. Stephen Mabbutt, from Banbury in Oxfordshire, Southern England, complained of acute discomfort from weird internal noises coming from his body. 

For instance, he could hear his heart beating, the noise of chewing food and even his eyeballs moving. The sound was deafening at times and the symptoms which began in 2005 gradually worsened in six years to include all sorts of bodily noises.

After several tests, and several rounds of consultation with doctors, he was diagnosed with a rare ear condition, called superior canal dehiscence syndrome. 

Mabbutt began experiencing weird noises in 2005, for instance if he spoke loudly, he would feel as if there was a vibration in his head. The symptoms slowly worsened and he discovered that each time he moved his eyeballs, he heard a loud scratchy noise very much like ‘sand paper being rubbed on wood’. Gradually he began to hear other noises from his body and it got really unbearable. 

A CT scan revealed a small hole in the temporal bone in Mabbutt's skull. Doctors found that the fluid from the semicircular canals of the inner ear was leaking into his brain, causing him to hear all those funny noises. 

Doctors operated upon him and now he has found complete relief from the  troublesome symptoms.
