Malay Men Suffering Violence At The Hands Of Wives

by VR Sreeraman on May 18 2009 6:42 PM

Men, who have for a long time been seen as the aggressors in a family, are now reported to be suffering the same violence at the hands of their wives.

As per Penang Integrity Institute (PII) chief executive officer Rozaidi Razali, there were at least 50 reported cases of men being physically beaten up by their wives between 2006 and 2008 nationwide.

There was even a case where the wife set fire to her husband.

"These are isolated cases but I believe there are many others which have gone unreported. It is a misconception that men are the aggressors and women the victims," Star Online quoted Razali as saying.

"Among the contributing factors are betrayal of trust and financial issues in a family. In most cases, the husbands were found to have cheated on their wives.

"The wives would vent their anger at them out of frustration and sometimes, they would beat their husbands for failing to give in to their demands," he added, after the opening of a family integrity forum at the Tabung Haji Complex in Bayan Lepas on May 14.

Nearly 300 participants from various government agencies attended the forum jointly organised by the PII and the National Population and Family Development Board (Penang branch).
