Make Some Amendments to Abortion Law, Vayalar Ravi Urges Irish Government

Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi has asked the Government of Ireland to make some amendments to the abortion law following the death of Indian national Savita Halappanavar after doctors denied her an abortion.

Asserting that the Government of India is concerned on this matter, Ravi said 'it seems that the doctors, who are expected to be medical ethics, have shown no concern to the life of Savita.

"The Irish Government has declared that they will go for an inquiry.... And it is my request that the Government of Ireland should show some kind of political determination and strength to heed to the request of the people, Human Rights Commission and others and make some amendments to the abortion law without hurting the sentiments of the Catholic faith," he added.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid earlier today offered his condolences to Savita's family, and said that the Irish Government is probing the matter.

Khurshid said the death of Halappanavar, a dentist who was denied an abortion in Ireland due to the country's controversial abortion laws, is a very sad incident.

Khurshid earlier on Friday said India's envoy to Ireland would formally raise New Delhi' concerns over the death of Savita.

Halappanavar, a dentist, was reportedly denied a potentially lifesaving abortion even while she was having a miscarriage.
