Italian lyric tenor Luciano Pavarotti has predicted that he is nearing the end of his life. The opera legend awaits death as he spends time giving singing lessons, and playing cards with close friends.

Pavarotti was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and he has not been seen in the public arena since then.

His daughter Giuliana said that her father knows that he is going to die soon, and that he speaks a lot about meeting his parents and finding peace.

'He knows he's going to die soon and often speaks of his greatest desire to meet his parents again and finally find peace,' the Daily Mail quoted her, as telling Italian weekly Diva and Donna.

The 71-year-old underwent a surgery in mid 2006 and Giuliana said that he is strong and is doing physiotherapy to cope with effects of the surgery.

'He is strong and is doing physiotherapy to get over the effects of the operation. 'He spends his time giving singing lessons and playing cards with three or four childhood friends, "she said.

The legendary tenor, who left his wife of 35 years to marry his secretary, is spending time with his wife Nicoletta Mantovani and their four-year-old daughter.

"He also spends a lot of time with his wife Nicoletta and young daughter Alice," she added.

In a post-operation interview to an Italian newspaper last year, Pavarotti claimed that he was a fortunate and happy man, and that the illness made him pay the price for the 'fortune and happiness'.

'I was a fortunate and happy man. After that, this blow arrived. And now I am paying the penalty for this fortune and happiness," he said.

Pavarotti's agent Terri Robson said that Pavarotti has chosen to stay away from the public eye, and that he is quite 'positive' at the moment.

"He is being very positive at the moment and concentrating on teaching and being with his family. While he is having the treatment he has chosen to stay out of the public eye but he has still been working. He is giving lessons and he is concentrating on his health," Robinson said.
