Judge Orders Teen to Undergo Spinal Surgery
A judge in Philadelphia has ordered that a 16-year-old injured wrestler, Mazzerati Mitchell must undergo a spinal surgery even though the teen and his parents are unwilling for the procedure due to their belief in herbal remedies and natural healing.
Doctors at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia felt so strongly about young Mazzerati's case that they reported it to Delaware County's Department of Children and Families. The judge has granted temporary custody to the county. Following the recommendation of several doctors, the judge Mary Alice Brennan of Delaware County ruled that the teen must undergo surgery to avoid spinal paralysis. The boy's mother Mrs. Vernall Mitchell who has studied natural medicine submitted a video to a news station to prove that her son does not need the operative procedure. She believes that her son will heal through rehabilitation and naturopathy. She said, "The operation could actually cause paralysis. There are alternatives."

However the judge asked the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia to go ahead with the surgery. The hospital authorities are to decide when and where the procedure will take place. A lawyer is likely to appeal the decision on behalf of the Mitchell family.
