Judge Calls on Government to Champion Marriage

by Rajashri on Jun 17 2009 7:43 PM

Mr Justice Coleridge has called on the British the Government to champion the institute of marriage so as to prevent the epidemic of broken families in the country.

"Although, superficially, these are private issues, they become matters of public concern when they are happening on such a huge scale and affect detrimentally such a significant proportion of the population," Sir Paul Coleridge stressed in a speech to the Parliament yesterday. "The reaffirmation of marriage as the gold standard would be a start."

He added that children are caught up in games of "pass the partner" between their parents and end up carrying scars for the rest of their lives. "Marriage is by no means perfect or the only way or only structure for living with a partner, but statistically it has proved to be the most enduring and, statistically, the children of such relationships perform the best."

He said co-habiting couples must be given some rights, but reiterated that marriage seemed to be the best solution.
