When Libby Appleby was in her first trimester of pregnancy, doctors at the University Durham Hospital confirmed that she would be delivering identical twins.

Astonishingly, the 37-year-old has given birth to the “Britain’s first black and white twins” and still feels bewildered seeing her babies.

Amelia was born with dark skin, black hair and brown eyes, while her sister Jasmine had fair skin, blue eyes and curly hair.

Though their skin tones vary, they are genetically identical. The twins are monozygotic, meaning they were formed in the same embryo but developed in separate sacs.

Ms Appleby said, "When they were born, we were flabbergasted, even the doctors couldn't believe it. They look like they're different races. Amelia is the spitting image of her dad, while Jasmine is a mini version of me."

A medical team of 13 performed the risky five-hour operation at Inselspital Hospital in Bern in December, with only a one percent chance of success.

Doctors tested a sample of libby’s placenta and confirmed that the twins are 100 percent genetically identical.

“Doctors told us the chances of conceiving mixed race twins are one in a million. We were thrilled they were so unique. Looking back, it's funny that we were worried we'd never tell them apart," she added.
