by Tanya Thomas on Dec 20 2008 10:41 AM

Using the pioneering "Ozone Treated Elemental Chlorine Free technology", the first of its kind in India, India’s rapidly-diversifying tobacco major ITC recently launched eco-friendly "Paperkraft Premium Business Paper".

Paperkraft is a superior and environmentally friendly, multipurpose paper for office and home use, which lets you exercise your power to "Go Green". This unique product is an integral part of ITC's significant initiatives to augment natural and scare resources and has been launched in line with ITC's triple bottom line commitment to building economic, environmental and social capital for the nation.

Yet another addition in ITC's wide array of differentiated FMCG products, Paperkraft Premium Business Paper has been created by ITC to provide consumers an opportunity to partner in our efforts to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change and create a positive environmental footprint. In terms of quality, Paperkraft offers a superior value proposition since it is the whitest and brightest 75 GSM business paper manufactured in India. A proprietary chemical treatment has enabled it to become an eco- friendly paper with a higher archival life.

The Paperkraft Premium Business Paper is being marketed by the Education and Stationery products business of ITC, which has a widespread distribution network across the country, through which it delivers its student stationery products branded as "Classmate".

Conventionally, Elemental Chlorine was used in the bleaching process during paper manufacture. The byproducts of this process include large number of Organo-chlorine chemicals, which are toxic and adversely impact the environment. ECF Technology virtually eliminates the production of such toxins. This is achieved by substituting elemental chlorine with chlorine dioxide. "Ozone treatment", is an advancement over ECF, resulting in even lower chemical usage and reduced water pollution.

These efforts encompass all critical elements of environmental sustainability and have led ITC to be the only company in the world, of its size and diversity, to achieve the milestones of being carbon positive, water positive and achieving close to 100 per cent solid waste recycling.

In paper manufacture ITC has been India's first company to adopt the Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) technology and has surpassed all stipulated government legislation on emission levels.
