IPad 2 Magnets Not So Good for the Heart

Teen spots a problem in the iPad Smart Cover and has warned people with heart problems to ensure it is kept at a distance from the chest.

Fourteen year old, Gianna Chien, presented a science fair project that evaluated the possibility of magnets inside iPad2 disrupting the functioning of implanted defibrillators in heart victims.

Use of hi-tech devices by modern parents has made children as young as 2-month-olds become obsessed with iPads, smart phones or similar devices.

Her study found that the 30 magnets inside second-gen iPads can shut down devices that are used to restart patients' hearts. Experts at the Heart Rhythm Society are now studying this finding to have a clear picture.

Her study showed that when the tablet was placed on a subject's chest, the magnets were found to activate during 30 percent of the trials. It did not however disrupt the pacemaker or loop recorder.

Meditronic Inc., well known manufacturers of defibrillators also said that their own testing did not show any risks in using the iPad.

The product manual by Apple does caution users with heart devices to maintain atleast 6 inches distance. They have also advised that it should be turned off completely in healthcare establishments.
