Intensified Diarrhea Control Fortnight Targeting Zero Childhood Diarrhea Launched In Manipur
Health Minister Phungjathang Tonsing launched the Intensified Diarrhea Control Fortnight (IDCF) at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal.
The IDCF program in India aims to improve awareness on the use of ORS (oral rehydration solution) and Zinc in childhood diarrhea and to achieve Zero childhood diarrhea death.

Every year around 140,000 children at the age of 5 years and below die due to diarrhea. Though there is no official record in Manipur it is believed that around 250 children die in Manipur every year due to diarrhea, said the health minister.

He also said that the state government will be distributing ORS and Zinc tablets through district hospital, CHC, PHC, PHSC and ASHA workers which do not have health centers.

Director Health Services Okram Ibomcha said that diarrhea is more prevalent during monsoon and post monsoon season and safe drinking water, hand washing, proper sanitation, immunization and breast feeding or taking appropriate nutrition are some of the ways to prevent diarrhea.

He said that preventing and treating dehydration due to diarrhea by using Oral Rehydration Solution and administration of Zinc tablets along with adequate nutrition intake by the child can easily treat the condition without further complications.
