Gurgaon based Kidney racketeer, Dr. Amit Kumar was reportedly arrested by Nepali Police today (Feb 07 2008). The Doctor, who has been responsible for conducting over 500 illegal kidney transplants, was found at a Jungle resort close to Nepal’s Capital, Kathmandu. Dr Amit, the prime accused and his brother, Dr Jeevan have been absconding from police ever since the transplant racket was unearthed.
Investigators believed for quite some time that, the kingpin was absconding in Nepal, with reports of his real name and passport being used to check into hotels as well as Dr. Upendra’s interrogation reports.This is by far the most shocking Kidney scandal India has ever witnessed. What is surprising is that someone like Dr. Amit Kumar, who had no definite credibility as a transplant surgeon could successfully undertake such an international kidney transplant tourism in the backyard of India’s Capital, New Delhi. This racket has once again reiterated the lack of proper system for registration of private hospitals in India. As per the 'Translation of Human Organ Act of 1994', any hospital or doctor performing transplants and its related work are required to seek permission from the appropriate authorities appointed by the government. Dr. Amit Kumar had been running the clinic for many years in the state of Haryana and apparently had greased most of the people who mattered including Haryana politicians and may have dealt with Bal Thackeray’s niece, Neha Thackeray.
The CBI and Interpol were also actively involved in tracing the whereabouts of this infamous doctor who has brought shame to the whole medical profession. Over the next few days, this drama which has kept the whole country awake is likely to reveal many names in the epoch of power and also give us an understanding on how the doctor bypassed scrutiny of the lawmakers. If not anything, it is hope that this saga will push government authorities to tighten its ropes on hospitals that undertake unrelated transplants regularly in the country.
