India Reeling Under Huge Influx of Fake Drugs

It has emerged that India is a hub of fake drugs with many counterfeit drugs bearing names of leading companies, the Washington Post has reported. "They look real, but all these are fakes," said investigator Suresh Sati, whose agency helps the police conduct raids on counterfeit-drug syndicates. Sati told the paper that one of the best ways to know if a drug is fake would be to look at the pricing, "The biggest giveaway is when someone is selling medicines very cheap. It is almost always fake," Sati said.

The fake drug industry across the world is estimated to be worth about $90 billion. It is thought that around 1 million people succumb each year after consuming such drugs.

One good thing in India is that the government has strengthened its laws whereby a person selling fake drugs can be sentenced to life imprisonment.
