 In the Northeast Boxing Becomes a Preferred Career Choice for Youth
After seeing the success of M.C.Marykom, Shiva Thapa and Devendro Singh at the national and international levels, boxing is fast becoming a preferred career choice for youth in the northeast.
These young aspiring boxers in Assam are sweating hard not only to compete with their opponents, but also to fight off the tag of backwardness.

Recently, a two-day all Assam sub-junior, junior and senior boxing championship" was held in Guwahati.

The Ulubari Boxing Club and the Assam Amateur Boxing Association jointly hosted and organised the event. It saw the participation of over 100 participants from eight districts of the state.

"In fact, there is no boxing academy in Sonitpur District, but probably after the success of Marykom and Thapa, the young boys are greatly inspired," said N Sharma, official Ulubari Boxing Club, Organiser.

For youth, boxing is not just a game, but a possible career objective. They want to take up boxing as a full time career and are training hard to make their dream come true. They are aiming to become international boxing stars.

"My future plan is to participate in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. So now I am training hard for that and preparing for the national and junior competitions. My aim is to win and bring laurels for our country," said Satyandra Buragohain, a boxer,

The event was more of a learning experience for children than just a competition. They learnt skills like team building, sportsmanship and competitiveness.

The main motive behind organizing the event was to promote sports in the region and put children into constructive activities from the beginning.
