Immigration Ban on HIV Positive People Lifted in US

by Rajshri on Jan 4 2010 9:37 PM

Starting January 4, people who have been tested positive to HIV virus can make their trip to the United States after the Obama administration overturned a 22 year ban that refused entry to immigrants who were suffering from AIDS.

The ban was placed during 1987 when the AIDS scare was at its peak and put United States in a small group of just 12 countries that had banned people suffering from HIV/AIDS to enter the country.

While the decision to overturn the ban was made in July 2008, it continued to be the official line until this month.

In October, President Obama gave a sign of things to come when he expressed his displeasure over the ban saying, “We lead the world when it comes to helping stem the AIDS pandemic, yet we are one of only a dozen countries that still bar people with HIV from entering our own country.”
