 How We Select Perfumes Demystified
Researchers at Charles University in Prague have conducted a new study which suggests that rather than selecting perfumes which try to mask our body odor, we select those perfumes which give out a scent similar to the smells of our body.
Over 12 volunteers were included in the study with researchers asking them to spray the perfume that they had themselves chosen on to one armpit while spraying a randomly chosen perfume on the other.

A panel of 21 women then rated the swabs taken from the armpits and they found the swabs taken from the perfume that the volunteers themselves had chosen to be more attractive and pleasant than from those which were randomly assigned.

“What we have found is there is a strong individual interaction between perfume and body odour. People choose fragrances to complement their own odour. It is probably why buying perfume as a gift is so difficult and why they end up lying in the bathroom not being used”, lead researcher Dr Jan Havlicek said.
