Hospital Staff Labeled HIV Positive Mother as ‘Bio-Hazard’ in Uttar Pradesh, India
A 30-year-old HIV positive woman who was admitted to a hospital in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh for delivery was labeled as ‘Bio-hazard’ by the doctors.
The woman was admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut on June 19 for a cesarean delivery. The doctors pasted a sign on her bed to indicate she was HIV positive and a red AIDS ribbon was also put up. Her medical condition was disclosed to all visiting relatives and friends.

The hospital staff made the woman to clean her own medical waste just days after delivery. The doctors also rebuked her for bringing another diseased child into the world.

The incident was reported to the Care Support Center (CSC), which helps HIV positive people. A team was dispatched to the hospital, the sign was still on display.

"We immediately tore it off and took the authorities to task. Fearing that the issue might become too big to handle, the hospital staff rushed to control the damage," Ritu Saxena, one of the team members.
