Hospital Staff Hastiness End Two Mothers Deliver Babies in Toilet
Two women had delivered babies in toilets of the labour ward in Civil Hospital, Gurgaon on Tuesday night.
The hospital had no gynaecologist around at the time, just one specialist on call duty and is the only state-run healthcare facility in the city.

The maternity ward has 30 beds. At the time the deliveries took place, only one general physician, three staff nurses, two support staff and one sweeper was present in the hospital.

Both the deliveries, took place around 1am. One of the babies, a boy, was reportedly delivered in the toilet's pot and was lucky to survive as its head was stuck in the cavity before the ward staff rescued it.

"The baby got stuck in the pot. As the mother screamed, the staff rushed to the toilet and brought the baby out. The baby's father was very upset and decided to tell the hospital authorities," the hospital employee said.

Preeti, a Badhapur resident, the baby’s mother was admitted that evening after she complained of labour pain. She was allowed to go to the toilet all alone despite being in pain.

Another case was, Kamlesh, a resident of Ketki Nadra, delivered the first of her twin daughters in the toilet. The staff came to her aid as she screamed out and carried her back to the bed, where she delivered the other baby.

Dr. Asrudin, principal medical officer, said, "These are toilets attached to the labour ward. As soon as doctors came to know, they immediately took the mothers to bed."

Deputy commissioner T L Satyaprakash, said, "I have checked with the Chief Medical Officer. She told me the deliveries took place within a minute and doctors rescued the mothers and the babies immediately. However, this shouldn't have happened. I request a corporate house or any other organization to come forward to adopt the maternity ward in the Civil Hospital. Though we are in process of building capacity in the healthcare sector, it is better to have some solutions till the time plans take shape."
