Himachal Pradesh Government Launches New Health Program for School Children
A new health program for children in government schools who suffer from critical illnesses has been announced by the Himachal Pradesh government on Thursday.
All children up to class 12, except children of serving or retired state and central government employees, would be covered under the school health programme, Principal Secretary (Health) Ali R. Rizvi said in a statement here.

He said eight categories of defects in a child at birth, 13 diseases of childhood, six deficiencies and 11 development delays and disabilities would be covered.

"The entire cost of secondary/tertiary care treatment for such diseases would be met, if the treatment was done in the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla or at Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Tanda," he said.

Rizvi said that if the child belongs to a family which falls under Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), then the first charge on cost of the treatment would be on the RSBY and the school health programme would supplement the RSBY cover.

Himachal Pradesh has over 15,000 primary and higher secondary government schools with a strength of around 10 lakh students.
