Heart Lung Transplants Carried Out on Consecutive Days in UK

by Rajshri on Jan 11 2010 8:51 PM

Staff at the Papworth Hospital in Cambridge have carried out two heart lung transplants on consecutive days in January in what is an important milestone for just three such procedures were performed in the UK last year.

"Combined heart lung transplantation is becoming less common because of severe donor organ shortages and it is remarkable that our team was able to carry out these two operations on consecutive days," said Steven Tsui, the Director of the Transplant Service. "These fortunate patients were able to receive their life-saving surgery thanks to the courageous decision of the donors and their families. However, we could save many more lives if more people support organ donation and joined the organ donor register."

Both patients are said to be doing well and are on the road to recovery.
