Highlights:
  • Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that causes pauses in breathing during sleep.
  • Disposable, diagnostic patch was developed to effectively detect sleep apnea.
  • The adhesive patch helps to record nasal pressure, blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate, respiratory effort, sleep time and body position.
Sleep apnea is a common disorder that causes one or more pauses in breathing during sleep. It may often go undiagnosed. A new disposable diagnostic patch could effectively detect obstructive sleep apnea at all severity levels.
The study results of the total rate of clinical agreement between the patch and standard-in-lab polysomnography could be 87.4% with 95% confidence interval of 81.4% to 91.9%

The findings could be used in obtaining approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for SomnaPatch.

The abstract of the research was also published in the online supplement of the journal Sleep.

Advantages of the Diagnostic Patch
  • Weighs less than one ounce
  • Helps to record nasal pressure, blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate, respiratory effort, sleep time and body position
Maria Merchant, PhD, CEO of Somnarus Inc, principal investigator, said, "Our study provided clinical validation of a new wearable device for diagnosing sleep apnea."

"It was most surprising to us how well this inexpensive miniature device performed in comparison with in-lab sleep studies."

Research Analysis
The research analysis included polysomnography (sleep study) and patch recordings from 174 subjects. In a home usability test, around 38 out of 39 users were able to successfully activate the diagnostic patch and collect about four hours of sleep data that could rely on the instructions that were included in the device.

Merchant, said, "Most home sleep diagnostic devices are difficult for patients to use and are disruptive to patient's sleep."

"Our study showed that this wearable home sleep monitor is very comfortable, easy to use and does not negatively affect sleep."

Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea could affect people of all age groups. The symptoms may include loud snoring, headache, disturbed sleep, memory problems and frequent nighttime urination.

The condition could be life-threatening and often goes untreated. Commercial drivers could be at an increased risk of having sleep apnea. Untreated sleep apnea could cause excessive daytime sleepiness, and also decreased alertness, impairs judgment and causes attention deficits.

Different types of Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea: It is a common type of sleep apnea that occurs when the soft tissue in the back of the throat could relax during sleep and block the airway.

Central sleep apnea: It is a less common type of sleep apnea that occurs in the central nervous system. This could occur when the brain fails to signal the muscles that could control breathing.

Complex sleep apnea: This type of sleep apnea is a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.
