According to a national poll on children’s health ‘not enough exercise” has gained the highest place in the priority list.

In the year 2012, lack of exercise is seen as the top health concern for children, according to a new University of Michigan C.S.Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll, exclusively conducted on children’s health.

In the nation wide poll's annual “top 10” list, a sample population of adults were asked to prioritize and list the top 10 health concerns regarding children.

For the first time in all these years ‘not enough exercise’ was rated by the majority of adults (39%) as the the biggest health concern. This was followed by childhood obesity (38%), smoking and tobacco use (34%), drug abuse (33%) bullying (29%) stress (27%) alcohol abuse (23 %) teen pregnancy (23%) internet safety( 22%) child abuse and neglect (20%).

The poll's results varied depending on race and ethnicity. Hispanic adults were more likely to rate obesity among kids first, followed by ‘not enough exercise’, drug abuse, smoking and tobacco use. Black adults too rated smoking and tobacco use as factors of highest concern. These two groups, however, listed racial inequality, gun-related injuries and sexually- transmitted diseases higher on their list.

Child health and welfare programs must take these community-related variations and come up with programs that address specific needs.

Childhood obesity is a serious concern and most adults are aware of the fact that lack of exercise is the prime reason behind this frightening trend. Michelle Obama’s campaign “lets move” attempts to fight this deplorable development among Americans, especially children. The first lady has even come up with a program to get children to eat a healthy lunch provided at school, contrary to the junk food that kids love to eat these days.

Children must be encouraged to exercise regularly, as exercising has added benefits such as improving attention and learning skills. After all, it’s only a healthy child who grows to become a healthy adult.
