According to the Telegraph, its name, 'munch', is an amalgamation of the words meeting and lunch.

The term has been used previously to describe gatherings of people interested in alternative sex.

There are already 30 active members of the group and it was given recognized status by the university's Committee on Student Life, which comprises students and administrators.

"The college does not endorse the views or activities of any independent student organization," however, a Harvard spokesman said.

In a statement founders of the group, who have remained anonymous, said it would "meet an otherwise unaddressed need on campus".

They said the club would 'promote a positive and accurate understanding of alternative sexualities and kink on campus', and allow 'college-age adults to reach out to their peers and feel accepted in their own sexuality', the report said.

However, the Harvard College Munch Club said any sexual contact at its meetings would be banned and it would instead focus on screenings, discussions and demonstrations.

It has also established a safety team so that victims of abuse or trauma can get suitable help, the report added.
