It is not uncommon to find absolutely slim and trim couples suddenly gain weight and look prosperous months into their marriage. To understand the connection between marital bliss and ample waistlines, researchers chose to track newly weds.
For long, gaining weight in adulthood has been associated with prosperity and happiness and this seems to hold good in happy marriages as well. A recent US study has found a solid connection between a happy marriage and weight gain.
AdvertisementThe research team tracked 169 newlyweds for four years to find that happy couples went on to put on extra weight. They found that a happy marriage was connected to weight gain while divorce with weight loss.
"Spouses who are more satisfied tend to gain more weight, and spouses who are less satisfied tend to gain less weight," researchers said. The study found that marriage had a similar effect on weight of both genders.
