Researchers at Tohoku University Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering in Sendai have found that green tea can help combat depression in seniors.

Their study examined 1,058 elderly Japanese individuals aged 70 years and over. Among them 20 percent of the men and 24 percent of the women had severe depression, while another 34 percent of men and 39 percent of the women showed signs of mild depression.

Of them 488 drank four or more cups of green tea daily, while 284 drank three or more cups. The rest drank one cup or none at all on a daily basis.

In people who drank four or more cups of green tea, feelings of gloom and doom were found to be 44% lower as compared to other participants. These effects were not observed with either oolong or black tea.

The details appear in the December issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
