Government Halts HPV Vaccine Trial After Deaths

by Rajshri on Apr 19 2010 6:30 PM

The ongoing HPV vaccine trials in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat have been stopped by the government following the death of six children. The vaccines in question are Gardasil by MSD Pharmaceuticals and Cervarix by GSK Pharmaceuticals.

The Phase III trials involved 14019 in Andhra Pradesh and 10,686 people in Gujarat. Fur of the six deaths occurred in Andhra, while the other two occurred in Gujarat. The study was being conducted by a NGO called PATH and was recommended by the Ethical Committee and Advisory Groups at state and central government levels.

The deaths in the study have been attributed to viral fever, drowning, suicide, severe anemia with malaria and suspected snake bite. However due to the continuing concerns over these vaccines, the government has suspended the trials.

The two vaccines have been developed as protection against cervical cancer.
