Gorakhpur People Get Tips on Family Planning
In Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, women have been receiving tips on family planning.
They are bing instructed in the use of contraceptives, dangers of transmission of sexual diseases and overall health related issues under the government's National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scheme.

Pamphlets were distributed to village women along with personal interactive sessions, giving them a platform to communicate their problems, which are often kept hidden.

The village women praised the initiative, saying it was an eye opener for them.

"We have got vital information about women health, use of contraceptives. Our queries on health were also answered and I think this was a successful exercise and I agree to what they were trying to tell us," said Sarita Devi, a village woman.

A NRHM representative, Sushil Kumar Singh, said: "We have one representative each for a population of 2000, who interacts with women and generates awareness about family planning. We go to slum area and visit each and every home to pass on the message. We also organize weekly meetings with couples to discuss health and welfare issues."

Singh added that programs like these would continue and rural people would be brought together to organise seminars and programmes on health welfare.

The reason for lack of family planning in rural India could be attributed to poverty, illiteracy and lack of awareness about sexual diseases plaguing society.

The Government of India launched the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) to carry out necessary corrections in the basic health care delivery system. The aim of the mission is to improve the availability of and access to quality health care, especially for those residing in rural areas, poor, women and children.
