Good Life in Villages Boosts Longevity

by Rajshri on Dec 5 2009 12:47 AM

Residents of Montacute, near Yeovil have been found to have the longest life expectancy in the UK. A study conducted by international business consultancy Watson Wyatt involving three million pension records found that the residents of this village will live till at least 89 years.

Researchers calculated a mortality score for pensioners over the age of 65 and used a complex formula to arrive at life expectancy. The highest life expectancy was in Montacute with 89 years, while the least was 82 years.

The Montacute villagers say the secret lies in growing their own fruits and vegetables.

"These findings show vividly that postcodes can explain substantial variations in mortality, with the longevity varying from 17 to 25 years according to their postcode band; a difference in expected future life time of eight years," said lead researcher Matthew Edwards. "These variations in life expectancy are due to substantial differences in general health and lifestyle patterns between different parts of the UK."
