Global Warming Viewed by Chinese Climate Skeptics as US Conspiracy to Sell Green Technology

Climate change skeptics in China view global warming as an elaborate American conspiracy amid their country's soaring carbon emission levels.

"Global warming is a bogus proposition," a Chinese intellectual, Zhang Musheng said.

Greenhouse effect causes excessive heat to build up in the earth’s atmosphere causing global warming and affects the environment and health.

He said the US seized on the global warming issue to sell green energy technology and thereby get rid of deep structural economic problems, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Musheng slammed Chinese policymakers for encouraging firms to buy foreign intellectual property for manufacturing renewable energy equipment.

"Lots of solar panels are made in China and the pollution is left in China but they are used overseas. The low-carbon economy, carbon politics and carbon taxes are actually driven by the West as the foundation for a new cycle of the virtual economy," he added.

Chinese President Hu Jintao had earlier vowed to lower the "carbon intensity" of economic output by 40-45 per cent by 2020 from 2005 levels.

A Netherlands Environment Assessment Agency's study had shown that China emits far more greenhouse emissions than any other country, with emissions doubling between 2003 and 2010.

A severe flu pandemic could cost the global economy up to $2 trillion or 4.8 percent of the world's gross domestic product, the World Bank said on Sunday.

The study also found that China's per capita emissions are higher than several rich nations, including France and Italy, and that it could overtake the US within six years.
