Generic Viagra Drug Will Not be Available Until 2017

The generic version of the Erectile Dysfunction drug Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate) was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration on March 2016. The cheaper generic version of the drug is expected to be available only at the end of 2017 in the United States.// Carmen Catizone, Executive Director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy said that if any pharmacy claims to sell a generic or cheaper form of viagra is definitely lying or selling a fake product that has not been approved yet.

Dr. Darius Paduch, Director of Sexual Health and Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian also said that the counterfeit viagra that is available in the market may be sugar pills or medicines with low dose of the active ingredient sildenafil which might not show any positive results and may make the person feel depressed.

He also added that these counterfeit viagra which are less effective may escalate the treatment options for the patient which would result in serious side effects sometimes.

Generic form of the drugs are made for a lower cost compared to the expensive brand name-drugs. True form of generic drugs help in saving lives and are made mainly for people to survive from life threatening conditions like diabetes. These drugs do not require any advertisement or expensive clinical trials for study.

Pfizer holds two patents for the generic drug Viagra, the first patent expired in the year 2012 while the other one expires only in 2020. The drug manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals U.S.A has signed agreement with Pfizer to make a generic version of viagra which would enter the market only by the end of 2017. Teva Pharmaceuticals apparently would pay royalties for Pfizer till 2020.

Pharmaceutical experts suggest people to buy medicines only from sites that are certified by the Government’s Pharmaceutical Associations inorder to avoid getting trapped from these fake viagra pills.
