Twelve-Year-Old Frozen Embryo Develops into a Baby in China

Thanks to the elimination of one-child policy in China, a test-tube baby has been born to a 40-year-old woman with polycystic ovary syndrome and blocked Fallopian tubes.

The baby boy hails to be the country’s longest preserved test tube baby. His mother, Li was planning to get pregnant in 2003 and due to her problem, she planned to go for in-vitro fertilization.

An embryo frozen for twenty years has become a healthy baby, giving women a choice to become mothers late in life.

She approached Tangdu Hospital’s Reproductive Medicine Center, where doctors harvested 12 of her eggs and created 12 embryos using her husband's sperm.

Two of the embryo was implanted into her womb while the viable eggs (around seven) were frozen by the doctors. She gave birth to her first baby in 2004 and kept paying three yuan per day for the storage of her eggs.

Luckily, the Chinese government introduced the two-child policy in 2014 and she decided to have a second baby. When doctors thawed her frozen embryos after 12 years, one embryo survived the thawing process and it developed into a baby boy.
