Fourth Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive Health Opens Today

Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss will inaugurate the Fourth Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health here today. The issues like the emerging challenges in sex education, problems of reproductive health and gender rights with a special focus on youth will be addressed during the conference.

The three-day conference will also have sessions on adverse health outcomes of physical and sexual violence within marriage.

Around 1,200 delegates, comprising policy makers, representatives of NGOs researchers and parliamentarians from 42 countries will attend the conference. The theme of the meet is 'New Frontiers in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights'.

The first plenary session will be attended by Union Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhary. She will speak on 'Implementing sexual and reproductive rights: An unfinished agenda'. There will also be discussions on the impact of Catholic, Hindu and Islamic fundamentalism on women's sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Some of the issues that will also be discussed include 'Enabling and Realising Young People's Potential in Improving Reproductive and Sexual Health', 'Equalising Sexual Relationships: Gender, Sexuality and Sexual Diversity' and 'Making Pregnancy Safe and Wanted'.
