First Cadaver Organ Donation at Mumbai
Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy Hospital (J.J Hospital), Byculla carried out its first cadaver organ donation on July 22nd, 2017.The donor was a 35 year old female who was admitted to the hospital with severe head injury following a road traffic accident on 17th July, 2017.She was declared brain dead on 23rd July following which her family members were counseled, to consider organ donation as an option. Her family consented to organ donation after several rounds of counseling. She is a resident of Jalgaon and is survived by her husband and two children.//
Through this generous deed, she was able to give new life to three people. Though her family members consented to donate all organs, only the Corneas and Liver were donated. Kidneys and heart could not be retrieved as they were declared unfit for donation. The liver was transplanted in Jupiter Hospital into a 56 year old man from Solapur. One of her corneas were transplanted into a 60 year old male and the other cornea into a 45 year old female in the same hospital where donation took place.

Dr.T.P.Lahane, Dean of Sir J.J Hospital, told the media that it is a big moment for the hospital as they were trying for cadaver organ donation for the past one year, but could not succeed as the family members did not give the consent. According to Dr.Gustad Daver, President of Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), the society would benefit if more public hospitals participate in Deceased Organ Donation Program. He also told that though there are many hindrances for a public sector hospital to carry out a cadaver organ donation program, they need to know the importance of this, as a single organ donor can save up to five lives.

This donation marked the 33rd organ donation in the city this year. With more efforts from the government hospitals, the number of organ donations can go up and can save more lives in the future.
