First Beating Heart Surgery in India Performed at AIIMS

by Rajshri on Apr 1 2010 9:20 PM

A 27-year-old heart patient from Uttar Pradesh has become the first patient in India to undergo beating heart surgery. Rashmi Katiyar, who underwent the surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), is only the second person in the world to have undergone such surgery.

Rashmi had a tear in the aortic wall and had to undergo surgery to repair it. The aorta is the largest artery of the body and carries oxygenated blood from heart to other parts of the body. A tear in its wall means that the blood supply to other parts of the body would have been sluggish.

“She had developed a dissection in the aortic wall, which could have leaked and ruptured. Her condition had been diagnosed 40 days prior to her appointment at AIIMS. By the time she reached us, she urgently required surgical intervention,” Dr Shiv Choudhary, additional professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at AIIMS, said.

A team of 20 medical professionals took seven hours to complete the surgery. A heart-lung machine was used and doctors conducted the surgery at room temperature. The patient was awake within two hours after the procedure was completed, doctors revealed.

Dr Choudhary said that this procedure would soon replace conventional heart surgeries as recovery was faster with this procedure.
