Depression is a very common mental illness, one out of every five women and one out of every twelve men in India suffer from depression. Depression is the most neglected disease, but many who suffer from depression are not aware of it.
Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone revealed her battle with depression and anxiety, recently. She wrote a letter to a daily newspaper about her fight with depression and also gave an interview about the issue.

Coming out in the open and talking about her depression won her a lot of appreciation from people worldwide. Adding to these praises, social activist Reshma Valliappan, who is a schizophrenic and works for mental health and sexuality related issues wrote a special appreciation letter to the actress.

In the letter, she has revealed another side of this story. She explains the plight of people suffering with depression when it comes to the way the society deals with them. She promised Deepika that she is not alone in her fight and hailed her efforts to create awareness.

Depression is a feeling of loneliness, dejection and helplessness which sets in the sufferer owing to altered brain function or chemistry. Depression is a severe mental condition that needs medical intervention. It is important to realize that understanding depression is half battle won.

There are few things that can be done to prevent depression like, regular exercise, getting enough sleep, reducing sugar intake, consuming omega 3 fatty acids and get professional help if stress and mood swings affect the mental and physical wellbeing.
