FDA Cautions Cardiovascular Disease Patients About Risks of Chantix

The FDA has issued a warning to smokers who have a history of heart attack or stroke and who are on the smoking cessation drug varenicline (Chantix), about the risk of a second heart attack.

The agency has confirmed that the drug’s label will now carry this updated warning informing consumers about these risks.

Pfizer has restarted TV advertising for its Chantix anti-smoking drug. Earlier it had been put on hold following concerns that it could lead to suicidal tendencies.

The label will also carry a warning about varenicline, which may elevate the risk of peripheral vascular disease in victims of cardiovascular disease.

The FDA in a statement has reaffirmed that it will continue to measure the cardiovascular safety of Chantix and had asked the manufacturer of the drug to conduct an analysis of data from all varenicline studies to understand the safety of using this drug.
