FDA Asks Bakery to Shut Shop After Finding Sugar in Supposedly Sugar-Free Snacks
The US Food and Drug Administration has asked a New Jersey bakery to shut down its doors after the agency found that its baked goods contained sugar and fat levels in excess of what was being claimed on the label.
The FDA conducted laboratory analysis of bakery products from The Butterfly Bakery and found that products that were being labeled as ‘sugar free’ actually contained sugar and had fat levels more than double of what was being displayed on the label.

The agency has now banned the bakery and its president Brenda Isaac from “processing and distributing food until they comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and applicable regulations.”

“This injunction demonstrates that the FDA will seek enforcement action against companies that mislead consumers on the products they purchase. Until Butterfly Bakery meets FDA regulations, it will no longer be able to process or distribute their products”, FDA’s acting associate commissioner for regulatory affairs, Melinda Plaisier said.
