Extra Scans Advocated for Women Expecting Twins or Triplets

New guidelines released by the NHS in Britain state that women who are expecting to give birth to twins or triplets should be accorded more care including extra scans.

According to the guidelines released by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), the would-be mothers should be cared by an expert team of doctors who have experience in handling multiple pregnancies and should also undergo a minimum of six scans in order to lower the risk of complications.

Nice said that such a step will reduce the need for assisted birth such as a caesarean section or the use of forceps.

Says Dr Fergus Macbeth, director of the centre for clinical practice at Nice, “Not all women with multiple pregnancies are cared for in dedicated settings such as 'twin clinics' or by multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals. This can lead to higher than necessary rates of assisted birth and Caesarean sections and also means that women are not appropriately assessed for possible risks during pregnancy.”
