Easier Test to Diagnose Diabetes Receives Thumbs-up

by Rajashri on Jun 6 2009 9:58 PM

The American Diabetes Association, International Diabetes Federation and European Association for the Study of Diabetes have agreed that a simple blood test that can accurately give out blood sugar levels over the past few weeks is the better way to diagnose diabetes than old tests, which are clumsy in nature.

The test called the A1C test measures damage to hemoglobin, which only occurs when blood sugar levels are consistently high. A level of 6.5 percent or higher of the A1C indicates diabetes, the groups agreed.

"Testing for diabetes using A1C is more convenient and easier for patients who will no longer be required to perform a fasting or oral glucose tolerance test," said Dr. David Nathan of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Another advantage is that the test requires only a small amount of blood. The American Diabetes Association estimates that nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes.
