During This Festival of Lights–Youth Shines Bright in 4 Patients
While the country was getting ready to celebrate the festival of lights on 12th October 2017, Mr. Dharmendra Kumar’s family from Mahavir Enclave in West Delhi was in the hospital awaiting an update about his condition after falling from his terrace and suffering a severe head injury. Immediately after the incident, he was taken to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri and was shifted to AIIMS on 14th October 2017 where the 24-year-old was declared brain dead according to The Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO) at AIIMS.//
ORBO encourages the public to pledge to donate their organs, it ensures a fair and equitable distribution and optimum utilization of human organs. It maintains the donor registration and co-ordination from procurement of organs to transplantation.

Mr. Kumar got married two years ago, he and his wife have a one year old son. He was an employee of the central government posted at CGO complex. The family was a bit reluctant at first, the wife was not present on the first day. Once the wife came to the hospital and was counselled she took the bold step of giving consent during her time of grief. The family understood that their act of donating their loved one’s organs, would help those suffering from organ failure and in need of an organ.

According to The New Indian Express his two kidneys, heart and liver were donated. One kidney was transplanted at AIIMS while the other was donated to a patient in Safdarjung, his heart was donated to a 50-year-old man and liver to a 45-year-old man. His corneas have been stored in an eye bank for future use.

Even though his family was grieving through this festive season, thanks to his amazing wife he was able to light up the lives of four people, which was the best gift their families could have ever asked for. Dr Aarti Vij, Professor and faculty in-charge, ORBO, AIIMS said that his wife should be given credit for his family to finally give the consent for donation.

It takes real strength and courage for donor families to agree to donate the organs of their loved ones, and just like Diwali – a festival of lights, Mr. Kumar just lit up the lives of many.
