Drop-side Cribs Will be Banned, Says Regulator

The Consumer Product Safety Commission chief has vowed to ban drop-side cribs after reports indicated that at least 32 kids have died due to strangulation or suffocation during the last 10 years. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum said that the manufacture and sale of such cribs would be banned. These drop-side cribs are a major fixture in American nurseries.

These cribs are a danger because the constant stress of raising and lowering a crib's side can weaken or break hardware, resulting in falls. Over 7 million drop-side cribs have been recalled by the commission to date and more recalls are on the anvil.
