Doctors Perform Heart Transplant Within 75 Minutes in Hyderabad
Heart from a road accident victim saves the life of Bangalore-based techie suffering from heart failure.
A 16-year-old boy met with an accident in Nizamabad, Hyderabad and was left with severe head injuries. Doctors at Continental Hospital declared him brain dead and the boy’s family agreed to donate his organs.

Santosh Sangvikar, a 29-year-old man, suffered a massive heart attack in Bangalore. He was left bedridden for more than one and a half years. His family had been searching for a suitable heart to save his life. He had been admitted to the Care Hospitals Nampally with congestive cardiac failure.

Doctors retrieved the heart from the brain dead boy in Nizamabad and within 13 minutes, it was transported to Care hospitals in Nampally, covering a distance of 26 km. Surgeons at Care Hospital immediately implanted the heart within 75 minutes. The heart transplantation has become a success and Sangvikar is kept under observation.

"We implanted the heart within 75 minutes. The total time from retrieval to implantation was about 130 minutes. The heart started beating soon after it was implanted. The patient was taken off ventilator the next day and made an excellent recovery . The patient is now on supportive drugs, including immuno suppression drugs used to prevent rejection and drugs to prevent infection," said Dr K V Raja Sekhara Rao, consultant cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon, at the Care hospital.
