Doctor With Indian Army Sacked for Faking Suicide and Eloping With Fellow Officer’s Wife

A doctor with the Indian army has paid a huge price for his love. Only he was in love with the wife of another man, a fellow officer.

He had staged an elaborate “suicide” drama and started a new life elsewhere with his ladylove. But he has since been caught out and sacked from the army for "desertion" and "stealing the affections of a brother officer’s wife."

The doctor, a major with the Army Medical Corps, had been posted at the military hospital in the Dinjan cantonment in Assam’s Tinsukia district in the North East. Sometime in June, he failed to turn up for duty and could not be traced anywhere in the area. Only his car was found on the banks of river Brahmaputra.

The “suicide note” recovered from the car was addressed to his parents. It said that he was committing suicide as he was unhappy with life. The major was already married and his wife — also an army officer — was away on a UN mission.

What made the authorities suspicious was the fact that while the body of the major was not found, the wife of a colonel in the same cantonment also went missing at the same time.

The major, an accomplished surgeon, had executed his plan well, except for one slip. He had used his mobile phone once to contact some of his friends to arrange for his girlfriend to be hosted by them in the Andaman islands in the south.

They fled along different routes in order not to raise any suspicion. The major first took a bus to Patna. From there, he took a train and travelled to Gujarat and Goa before making his way to the small town of Sangli in Maharashtrain western India. His girlfriend, on the other hand, first went to the Andamans and then to Chennai, from where she went to Sangli.

“The major made just one mistake. He used his mobile phone instrument initially after desertion in order to talk to a friend of his, since he wanted his paramour to be hosted at the Andaman Islands. The location of the instrument was traced. Even though the major later changed his mobile phone instrument, it was too late. This one mistake was enough to trace him,” said an investigating official.

When the military sleuths finally traced the major in Sangli three months later, he had already established himself in the civilian world along with the lady of his passion. For a living he was practising as a cancer surgeon at a private hospital.

He was arrested, courtmartialled for desertion and other offences and dismissed from service in January this year, but nothing much is known of his situation at the moment.
