Doctor Dies of Swine Flu, Kin Demand Compensation
The family of a senior resident doctor, who succumbed to swine flu, has sought compensation from the government.
Dr. Dinesh Singh, who worked as a senior resident in the Department of Anesthesia at the Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya (CNBC), Delhi, died on March 3 after 23 days of treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

His family members have sent a petition to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Health Minister Satyendra Jain, seeking compensation for the loss.

Dr. Avinash Singh, brother of the deceased, “My brother was first admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital. At the hospital, routine tests were done. As there was a strike at the hospital and it was a Sunday, treatment was very slow. My brother’s condition was deteriorating, so we shifted him to Sir Ganga Ram on February 8 night.”

The deceased’s brother tried to meet the Health Minister on Monday, but the appointment was denied. “There is a compensation policy for on-duty doctors if they die of a communicable disease,” said Dr Avinash Singh.

However, Health Minister Satyendra Jain said that they had not received any request for compensation. “The family has not met me nor sought an appointment. I have not received any representation from them. When we get it, we will definitely consider the petition. From our information so far, the deceased was H1N1 positive, but he also had renal failure and an infection.”
