Do You Want to Win an Olympic Gold? Then Change Your Name!

by JShree on Aug 12 2008 2:33 PM

Thai weightlifter Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon owes her first Olympic gold in the women’s 53kg class to a fortune-telling nun’s advice to change her name to improve luck.

She has revealed that the nun advised her to change her name from Chanpim Kantatian to improve her luck last year.

And it seems the charm has bore quite a sweet fruit for her, as the 24-year-old won her first Olympic gold medal in the women’s 53kg class.

"A fortune teller told me if I changed my name I would go far, so I changed it because I wanted to go to the Olympics. Last time I didn’t make it, and now I wanted to go in," Times Online quoted Prapawadee as telling reporters after her win.

However, her much elongated name did not prove to be quite lucky when she failed in her attempt to lift a record-breaking 130kg in the "clean and jerk" multi-movement weightlifting category.
