Diabetes Management Leaps Forward With the Development of Artificial Pancreas

Scientists have developed an "artificial pancreas" which could bring a world of hope to the lives of millions of people suffering diabetes. Home testing of this device has been successful for the first time.

The device keeps a check on blood glucose levels and employs an infrared data link to convey the information to an insulin pump which is connected to the patient's body. This helps in adjusting insulin levels appropriately.

IRCM Researchers: Artificial Pancreas Holds Promise for Treating Diabetes
IRCM researchers have found that artificial pancreas improved glucose levels and significantly reduced the risk of hypoglycemia as compared with diabetes treatment using an insulin pump.

These equipments have been tested successfully with five people with Type 1 diabetes in the UK. These five patients are happy with the results of testing the device at home.

The successful home trial offers promise to victims of living a concern free life with no bother about blood glucose or insulin in their bodies. This device also helps patients reduce their risk of other complications due to diabetes.

Dr Alasdair Rankin, the director of research at Diabetes UK, said, "As the technology progresses, we expect to make Type 1 diabetes an increasingly manageable condition until eventually we will reach the point where people might check their artificial pancreas when they get up in the morning and then do not have to think about their diabetes for the rest of the day."
