Braving the chilly weather, hundreds of people on Sunday participated in a walkathon to raise awareness about breast cancer.

A self-help group named 'Can Support' organized the walkathon, 'Walk for Life'.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur flagged off the walkathon.

"This walkathon is to create awareness amongst the women of India regarding breast cancer. The sooner one comes to know of the disease the easier it is to treat it," said Union Social Justice And Empowerment Minister Meira Kumar.

"Delay only creates problem for them. It is very necessary to create an awareness over the issue," she added.

People from all age groups came out to support the cause.

U.S. Ambassador David Mulford also came along with his wife Jeannie, who herself is a breast cancer survivor.

Due to lack of awareness, most of the breast cancer patients are diagnosed at an incurable stage.

According to an estimate, approximately 11 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year worldwide and around seven million people die of the disease every year.
